You may have heard that using a ball chair as a chair replacement is an easy way to lose weight and strengthen your core, but my research seems to contradict that. Just sitting on a ball chair does very little for you. Other studies have reported increased movement but also increased "spinal shrinkage".

Should all this scare you away from an exercise ball? No, but it has changed my mind about using one as a full-time replacement, you are much better off getting an ergonomic chair and using an exercise ball for short periods of time.

Given the conflicting, but mostly negative studies about using a ball chair as a replacement for your office chair we recommend that you talk to your doctor, physical therapist, or personal trainer and get suggestions on exercises that are good to perform while sitting on an exercise ball. Use the balance ball for short periods of time and use those exercises then - during a conference call might be a good opportunity.
